Wicomico is the number one agricultural producing county in Maryland with $175 million of agricultural production annually. Popular crops include corn for grain, soybeans, wheat and vegetables. Wicomico also leads the state in broiler production.
Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation The Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation preserves productive farmland and woodland, curbs urban expansion, protects wildlife, and enhances the environmental quality of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The Foundation purchases agricultural preservation easements that forever restrict development on prime farmland and woodland.
The Domestic Marketing Program helps Maryland farmers sell their products, mostly within the state. The program is instrumental in organizing farmers' markets throughout Maryland and helping local producers sell their goods to regional grocery stores. The program also provides organic certification designation to farms that qualify by using no synthetic chemical on their crops.
Maryland's Department of Agriculture (MDA) International Marketing Section helps companies market agricultural products abroad. The program produces directories, markets at trade shows and sponsors seminars and trade missions for Maryland producers interested in exporting goods ranging from foods to horses to Christmas trees.
Wicomico County Extension Office Wicomico County's Extension Office provides research-based practical education to the problems of American families, agriculture, business, and industry.
